Fort Pillow’s strategic location on a high bluff overlooking the Mississippi River led to its occupation by Confederate and Union forces during the Civil War. A controversial 1864 battle resulted in the deaths of about 300 Black soldiers after they surrendered, known as the “Fort Pillow Massacre.” Preserved breastworks, restored fortifications, and exhibits and artifacts explore the history of the Fort.
