This beloved icon south of the White House grounds formerly was a cut tree. Today, the evergreen located on the Ellipse is a live specimen lit by thousands of bulbs switched on during an annual holiday ceremony featuring words from the president and musical performances. Afterward, the tree welcomes visitors.
