Towering as high as 755 feet above the San Luis Valley floor, Great Sand Dunes’ main dune field encompasses more than 30 square miles. Formed by particles of golden sand that are scooped up by prevailing southwesterly winds and deposited at the base of the rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the dunes are constantly shifting and being reshaped.
