The first major Civil War battle fought west of the Mississippi River took place at this scenic setting in 1861. It was a Southern victory that claimed more than 2,500 Union and Confederate casualties. A self-guided road tour leads to key battlefield sites, including Bloody Hill, where the struggle’s most intense fighting took place.
