Forty miles long and an average of five miles wide, this spectacular dune system was formed by wind-blown sand from an ancient lake. It is a hugely popular off-highway vehicle playground with some of the dunes rising to around 300 feet. Visitors seeking non-motorized recreation, fauna, flora and solitude find them in the Colorado Desert site’s North Algodones Dunes Wilderness.
