Indigenous peoples known as the Hopewell built burial mounds and earthworks in now-Chillicothe between 200 BC and AD 500. Six sites include the Hopewell Mound Group, Mound City Group, and Hopeton Earthworks. The Hopewell built earthworks in geometric patterns and gathered at them for ceremonies and cultural events.
