Seven tidewater glaciers shed their ice into the sea at Glacier Bay. Watching the glaciers calve – when huge chunks break off from the edges of the ice flows and splash dramatically into the frigid water – thrills visitors observing from watercraft or cruise ships. The park’s relatively young glaciers were formed during the Little Ice Age that peaked around 1750.
