African-American “Buffalo Soldiers” stationed at this important facility played vital roles during America’s westward push after the Civil War. The troops helped protect the West Texas frontier and the San Antonio-El Paso Road. Today, fort visitors tour restored buildings
and other remnants. They also chat with interpreters dressed in period garb, hike and study museum exhibits.
