A vast volcanic wilderness of lava flows, cinder cone volcanoes, and lava tube caves once barred the way for Spanish explorers crossing New Mexico, earning this area the name El Malpais or “the bad country.” Visitors explore the 60,000 year eruptive history of the monument at scenic overlooks or along ancient trails crossing the lava.
