Centuries after its colonization by the Spanish, the Danes used Christiansted wharf on St. Croix to build a bustling economy reliant on slave labor, rum, and sugar. They maintained their settlement from 1734 to 1917. The Site preserves structures for exploration, including Fort Christianvaern, the Steeple Building, and the Scale House.
