Thacher Island is accessible only by water and boasts a wildlife refuge and a National Historic Landmark light station. This station, also known as Thacher Island Twin Lights, features two granite towers completed in 1861 to replace their wooden predecessors. About one mile offshore from Rockport, the lights prevented ships from crashing near the Island and in the waters off Cape Ann.
