Ahead of the Civil War, a thriving Black community grew in Beacon Hill. Fourteen black-owned properties, including churches, schools, homes, and memorials, are today connected by the Black Heritage Trail honoring their contributions to the Abolition Movement, Underground Railroad, Civil War, and fight for equal rights.
