Seven Royal Governors of the Colony of Virginia, as well as the first two elected Governors, called the Palace home between its construction in 1706 and 1780 when the capital of Virginia was moved to Richmond. The main house burned in 1781 but was reconstructed and is used today by reenactors to demonstrate their trades and craftsmanship.
