The sun reflecting off its red rocks inspired explorer John Wesley Powell to give this Green River canyon its name in 1869. Nearly 100 years later, the Flaming Gorge Dam was completed providing water storage and electricity to the area. The resulting reservoir is now famous for its trophy fishing and outstanding recreation opportunities.
