On March 6, 1836, Mexican troops successfully assaulted this 18th-century Spanish mission, killing all of its approximately 200 defenders. Six weeks later, Texas independence was won at the Battle of San Jacinto. Visitors reverently tour this hallowed site that to many Americans symbolizes selfless sacrifice.
