New Deal era projects on the Cumberland Plateau saw the construction of Norris and Caryville Dams and the creation of several state parks. One, built along Cove Lake, is nestled in a mountain valley of wetland and woodland and home to hundreds of migrating birds. During its creation, unearthed remnants led to the discovery that indigenous peoples lived here from A.D. 1000 to 1200.
