On April 12, 1861, Confederate artillery batteries opened fire on this fort in Charleston Harbor, igniting the Civil War, America’s bloodiest conflict. Visitors who arrive on concessioner-operated ferries learn the Fort Sumter story, from its first bombardment to its occupation by Southern troops and eventual surrender to Union forces.
