On August 9-10, 1877, Nez Perce men, women, and children, believing they enjoyed a respite from pursuit by U.S. Army soldiers and citizen volunteers, were attacked at this site. The Native Americans prevailed in this battle, but their losses led to their surrender two months later. Memorabilia is on display in the visitor center, and the battlefield is open to self-guided and guided tours.
