Settled by the Dutch in 1683, this former river port was a major center for whale rendering, today it is home to modern industries and higher-education institutions, including Vassar College. A main attraction is the lofty Walkway Over the Hudson pedestrian bridge. The city also is known for its historic properties, Main Street storefronts, museums, galleries, parks, shopping and dining options.
