The great forests that cloak these distinguished Southern mountains create the bluish “smoke” that shrouds the Smokies and gives the mountains their name. The vegetation “breathes” organic compounds into the moist mountain air, helping create a hovering mist. The park is home to 24 species of salamanders and 1,500 black bears.
