In the early 1950s, members of a scout troop were lowered into a cave created many centuries ago by the cooling and hardening of flowing volcanic lava. The youngsters were the first to explore a portion of this 2.5-mile lava tube, the continent’s third largest. Today, a
stairwell leads to two routes, one easier than the other.
