When the first Europeans arrived in the 1500s, about 200,000 Timucua lived in Florida. The Native Americans eventually would be decimated by disease and war. The site honors the people who farmed and hunted in the area for thousands of years and preserves one of the last unspoiled coastal wetlands on the Atlantic Coast.
