John C. Frémont recognized the Spanish used this trail for exploration between New Mexico and California as early as the 16th Century. Consisting of a 700 mile route meandering through six states, this arduous trail descends into canyons, crosses deserts and ascends mountains. It was heavily used by traders and trappers in the 19th Century.
