Settled at the mouth of the Fox River on an inlet of Lake Michigan, Wisconsin’s first settlement was nicknamed “La Baye” by the French and called Green Bay by the British due to the water’s greenish color. As a Great Lakes port of entry, the city became a major shipping center. Visitors flock here for Packers games at Lambeau Field, concerts at the historic Meyer Theatre, museums, and the Botanical Garden.
