Many of the geologic features adorning this rugged highdesert landscape were created by hardening volcanic lava. Most notable are the monument’s hundreds of caves. Stairways, ladders and trails take visitors to and through the developed caverns, which are rated by their levels of difficulty. Lava Beds also protects 16 resident and migratory bat species often seen in flight after dusk.
