Within the Tonto Basin sit two Salado Indian cliff dwellings built around 1300 AD and abandoned for unknown reasons fewer than two centuries later. Preserved ruins of the upper and lower cliff dwelling remain, built within natural caves on a steep hillside overlooking Theodore Roosevelt Lake. Native cacti, mountain lions, bats, and other creatures of the Sonoran Desert seek refuge in the monument today.
